OTRS CE 6 Allows Auth Bypass via Remote-User Header in CGI Deployments
A critical flaw in OTRS Community Edition 6 lets attackers impersonate users by spoofing headers, bypassing password checks entirely.

Key points
- CVE-2026-93582 is rated Critical with a CVSS score of 9.4.
- The vulnerability affects OTRS Community Edition 6 and earlier versions.
- OTRS 7 and later are immune due to architectural changes.
OTRS Community Edition 6 contains a critical authentication bypass vulnerability that allows unauthenticated remote attackers to impersonate existing users. The flaw, tracked as CVE-2026-93582, stems from how the software processes environment variables in specific web server configurations. According to the NVD record, the issue enables access to the Generic Interface without valid credentials.
Root cause
The HTTP Basic Authentication modules in OTRS CE 6 accept authenticated usernames from the REMOTE_USER or HTTP_REMOTE_USER environment variables. In CGI and mod_perl deployments, web servers map HTTP request headers to corresponding HTTP_* environment variables. An attacker can supply a crafted Remote-User header, which the application exposes as HTTP_REMOTE_USER. OTRS trusts this value as an already authenticated username and skips password verification.
Attack path
Exploitation requires HTTP Basic Authentication to be configured as the backend and a web server environment where attacker-controlled headers are exposed via %ENV. By sending a specific header, an attacker authenticates as an existing agent or customer user. The resulting privileges depend on the impersonated account. Successful exploitation may allow access to confidential information and modification of data or configuration settings.
Affected versions
- OTRS Community Edition 6.x
- Products based on OTRS Community Edition are also likely affected.
- OTRS 7 and later are not affected.
Mitigation
- Upgrade to OTRS 7 or later, which uses Mojolicious/Hypnotoad and does not expose arbitrary headers via %ENV.
- Ensure the REMOTE_USER mechanism requires validation through the configured SSO shared secret.
- Remove the unused HTTP_REMOTE_USER fallback as a security-hardening measure.
- Restrict web server configurations to prevent mapping attacker-controlled HTTP headers to environment variables.
What to do and how to stay safe: OTRS
- Audit your web server configuration to ensure HTTP request headers are not mapped to environment variables accessible by the application.
- Verify if HTTP Basic Authentication is used as the primary backend and consider switching to a more secure method.
- Monitor logs for unusual authentication patterns or unexpected user activity that may indicate exploitation.
- Once the vendor provides an update for older versions, apply it immediately to patch the vulnerability.
